The Art & Science of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (Level 1)

Course Description (Brochure)

The Art & Science of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (ASTLHE- Level I) is an online, asynchronous, self-paced, training program, where educators will interact with the content through related learning activities, engage in deep learning through live interaction with local/foreign practitioners, and apply principles and methodologies that are based on well-known international perspectives of teaching & learning in Higher Education. The program is designed to enhance and improve one’s understanding of what elements motivate and engage the students to achieve the desired learning outcomes. This becomes all the more important when designing and delivering courses for online, hybrid or mix-mode instructional pedagogies.

The 8 sessions of the Level I program focus on 6 critical elements (Communications, Participation, Critical Thinking, Live Lectures, Setting Course Objectives & Differentiated Instruction) that form the core around which academicians can build their courses and deliver them effectively.

Course alignment, the international key that defines the quality of any course, has been used effectively and throughout in the design of this course. All sessional learning objectives (SLOs) are linked to at least one-course learning objective (CLOs), the relevant learning content, and the associated learning activities. This ensures that all the knowledge, skills and approaches generated in this program, ultimately steer participants towards the CLOs.

Apart from the many takeaways from this program, the design & structure of individual sessions/modules/units are the icing on the cake. One may, effectively, use it as a template for designing/delivering one’s own courses, thus achieving the desired learning outcomes.

Research Agenda

Based on his exhaustive doctoral research, Dr. Bhatty has decided to pursue further research in the areas/topics that he identified as “not having enough clarity or depth to do justice to the subject.” He is current research agenda is the following:

  • Possible revision of the Community of Inquiry model (COI) to incorporate a fourth presence as already suggested by several renowned academic researchers.

  • Teaching Presence and Teacher Presence are two very different, non-interchangeable concepts. Their interchangeability in research literature is not an acceptable option.

  • Do Professional, Instructional Designers bear some responsibility, for the possibility of reduced level of learning outcomes, when their Master/Cookie cutter Courses are taught by teachers not involved in designing that course. Is this, primarily, a commercial compromise?

  • The reality that Teaching Presence is, actually, a catalyst for the other two presences i.e., Cognitive and Social Presences, and not just a third presence/ individual entity on its own.

  • Is Teaching Presence the lifeline for effective asynchronous online pedagogy? If so, how does it provide the oxygen to achieve elevated learning outcomes?
