Brief Description of the Workshop: For teaching excellence to gain parity with research intensity as the dominant narrative espoused by universities, a teaching excellence framework will be outlined for discussion. The teaching excellence framework includes a) revisiting student ratings of teaching; b) teaching award programs; c) the role of teaching and learning centers; c) the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and d) tenure and promotion policies. The framework rests on sustainable funding, peer review and reliable metrics for the evaluation of excellent teaching – all of which support institutional efforts to make teaching count.
